ARRANGER NOTES — The dramatic introduction of this traditional hymn favorite expresses the confidence of the opening lyrics which say: “My hope is built on nothing less than Jesus’ blood and righteousness!” In fact, this entire arrangement reflects the strength and boldness of this statement of faith. Musically speaking, you will notice that two basic elements of music are a departure from the straightforward hymn that you are accustomed to playing: the RHYTHM (4/4 meter rather than 3/4) and the HARMONY which differs greatly from the basic chord progressions found in any hymnal. At the modulation to G major in bar 18, the original meter (3/4) returns briefly for a few bars, reappearing when the arrangement modulates up a half step to the key of A flat major. Notice in bars 32 and 33 that the chord symbols are written enharmonically, making them easier to read.
